Giving back

Each year the community at Timberwolf CrossFit takes time to give back to those in need through a fundraising competition called Freeze Fest Team Challenge. The goal of the event is to bring together the local CrossFit community to raise money for charity. This year we are collaborating with Wiggle Your Toes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping amputees and their families regain independence and mobility.

Tony, the owner of Timberwolf CrossFit and Jake, the owner of CrossFit White Bear are good friends and were talking about how they had missed an opportunity to raise money for the Barbell for Boobs event with their CrossFit boxes back in 2012. Because of this missed opportunity, they decided to create an event to bring both Timberwolf CrossFit and CrossFit White Bear together for a cause. Tony mentioned he had met a gentleman named Greg whose son, Isaac, had special medical needs. Greg had told Tony that traveling from Virginia to Minnesota for Issac’s medical treatments were becoming a financial hardship and adding to the increasing medical expenses for his care. From that conversation, Tony and Jake knew that was going to be the fundraising cause for their event and were able to raise $6,000 to help Isaac and his family with their expenses.
The original fundraiser was to be a competition between the two CrossFit boxes. The goal was to bring the community together for a common goal of raising money to ease Isaac’s family’s financial burden while getting in a good wod. They made the competition a co-ed event to allow for a fun, light-hearted competition with like-minded people rather than a hardcore competitive competition. What started as a competition between their two boxes and athletes spiraled into the 2013 Freeze Fest Team Challenge. There were 59 co-ed teams and over 400 spectators.
After the success of the 2013 Freeze Fest event, Tony and Jake decided they wanted to do it again. The 2014 Freeze Fest Team Challenge was held on Saturday, February 8th, 2014 at the Union Depot in St. Paul. We had 140 teams and over 600 spectators cheer on our athletes. We collaborated with the Wiggle Your Toes organization and raised $10,000.00. The funds were used to help 8 year old Jane Richards, a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing, receive a new running leg.
The 2015 Freeze Fest Team Challenge will be held on Saturday, January 17th, 2015 at Champions Hall in Eden Prairie, MN.
We are again collaborating with the Wiggle Your Toes Foundation, founded by Aaron Holm, to raise funds for victims of limb loss. Wiggle Your Toes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping victims of limb loss and their families in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts through consultation, planning and referrals.
